Classics Revisited...
Chris Rank is an accomplished photographer who began taking pictures in middle school. He started thinking about adding graphic design to his repertoire as early as high school for a very practical reason: the dawning of the digital age of photography created a lot of uncertainties for rising professionals. This revolution sparked creative juices untapped and he spent hours teaching himself Photoshop, Illustrator and other digital tools. His penchant for drawing and painting led him easily through the mazes of type, layout, design and color.
As an undergraduate at the University of Georgia, Chris applied to and was rejected from the graphic design program three times. Undeterred, he graduated with a BFA in Photography and a self directed BA in Studio Art, but in the area of design he remained largely self-taught until he began a graduate program at Syracuse University several years later. There he not only continued honing his photography but studied under such renowned designers as Peggy Stark Adam and Mario Garcia. His design work was so well regarded that after completing his graduate course work in photography, he was asked to remain as an adjunct professor in the design department.
Today, Chris’ passion for design runs a bit deeper than just the pragmatic: Chris enjoys the interplay between creativity and problem solving that design work intrinsically entails. He also admits to having a strange intrigue with fonts! Chris’ active, curious nature requires that he continually pursue more than one creative outlet and the pairing of photography and design provide that stimulus on a daily basis.
