- If you feel like a weirdo when you are lamenting, don’t. You might just be in sync with all of creation.
- Conversely, if you feel like you don’t have any reason to lament, you might be out of sync with all creation.
Given that lament has been so absent in our church tradition and culture for so long, I think it’s going to take a while for us to be comfortable with it. Change is hard, and it takes time. I hope that 5 years from now, when someone brings up lament, we don’t say, “Oh yeah, we did that during the Coronavirus back in 2020.”
Lament isn’t just something we should only do during pandemics, big disasters, or major devastations. It should be a regular and normal part of our worship. Why? Because in Romans 8:12-24, God tells us that all creation is lamenting right now and will continue to lament until Jesus returns. In the same passage, God also makes clear that we should be lamenting with all creation. So, if we are not lamenting, we are out of sync with reality.
I encourage you to take some time to reflect and meditate on Romans 8:12-24 before Sunday and then really dig into it using our Daily Worship Devotions next week. However, before you do delve into it, try this little experiment. How would you answer this question: What is it that all creation is groaning and waiting for? Take some time with that before checking your answer against Romans 8:12-24.
Yours in Christ’s love,
